Looking for a cheap and easy 4th of July craft with the kids? I’ve got you covered!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • paper
  • paper plates
  • paint – red, white, and blue preferrably
  • toilet paper rolls

This is such a fun and affordable craft for the whole family! I used construction paper and paint we already had in our craft supply stash, which made this craft feel free! (girl math)

First you’ll want to start by saving empty toilet paper rolls. We used four but you may want more depending on how many colors you plan to use and how many kids will be creating the craft.

Next you’ll want to start cutting the toilet paper rolls. I cut a quarter to a half way up each roll in varying widths. This will create different “fireworks”. If your kids are old enough to use scissors, this is excellent practice!

I used acrylic paint and finger paint, since I used what I already had on-hand. Acrylic paint creates a thicker, more distinct marking for crafts (although I was pleasantly surprised with the finger paints this time). On the other hand, acrylic paint is water-resistant and therefore permanent. If you’re looking for an easier cleanup without the worry of paint on all the surfaces – finger paint is the way to go! It’s easy to wipe off most surfaces and wash out of clothing. You’ll notice I didn’t have blue acrylic paint, and it still looks great in the final product.

Next, you’ll put each color of paint on paper plates. I used a foam brush to spread out the paint. Now it’s time for the kids to dig in! Depending on age, you may need to help guide them initially, but even the youngest kids will grasp the idea quickly. Although we sometimes have an end result in mind, it can lead to the most fun when the kids take the reins and create something unique!

An additional tip for younger children: use painter’s tape to secure the paper to the table while painting. When finished, it’s easily removed without damaging the table or paper!

Here’s the end result! My son wanted to simply finger paint by the end–and that’s okay. I am all about trying and learning new things, but they are still always learning so much even if an activity doesn’t go exactly as planned.

I hope you have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July holiday with family and friends! Comment below if you tried this simple and affordable craft.
